Thu 12 Dec 4 p.m. PST — 4:50 p.m. PST

Abstract:

Join Indigenous AI practitioners from Te Hiku Media and FLAIR as they share their experiences building speech and language technologies from the ground up.

Mainstream datasets, models, and benchmarks rarely consider the linguistic and cultural differences of Indigenous language communities.

Indigenous technology systems must be designed by the people, for the people to ensure the process and outcomes are scalable as well as responsible and ethical. This panel will demonstrate how community-led design leads to community-focused solutions that will last beyond the next 7 generations, protecting the past, present, and future.

The speakers will explore practical design decisions, challenges, successes, and future opportunities in using AI to amplify Indigenous voices and cultural knowledges worldwide.
